Clean air advocates are supporting the Environmental Protection Agency's controversial efforts to curb carbon emissions from power plants.

Members of the Obama administrationbegan an 11-city listening tour to get input on its plan at a session in Lower Manhattan Wednesday.

Melanie McDermott, former associate director of the Rutgers Initiative on Climate and Society, said the links between carbon emissions and climate change were real.

“The exacerbation of extreme weather events and the relentless rising of the seas are already exacting economic costs. The question is who will pay and when,” said McDermott at a City Hall news conference.

There are currently no federal regulations in place to curb carbon. The EPA will accept comments from the public until November 8. Opponents say the proposed rule is overly aggressive and based on flawed technology.
